The birth of portable chargers (or power banks) makes up for the lack of power in cell phones. Thus, many companies wanted to transfer this idea to laptops.
The main drawback of this idea was the charging port of a laptop.
Cell phones use a USB charging port and charge at a voltage of 5 volts (V). But when it comes to laptops, there are a wide variety of ports and charging voltages depending on each manufacturer.
For this reason, companies that wanted to bet on this type of product found the idea difficult and costly to implement; since it required using a power bank with the presence of a DC or AC charging port (plug), as well as adding multiple adapters compatible with major manufacturers of laptops for their product to reach a wider audience.

However, even if the idea worked, portable chargers were large and heavy; they’re too uncomfortable to carry in a backpack or bag.
However, the portable charger industry has benefited from the USB Type-C port along with the Power Delivery charging protocol.
The USB Type-C is a new USB charging port set to become the future universal port. This is for powering and connecting to any electronic device (cell phones, cameras, headphones, printers, monitors, laptops…).
Cell phones were the first devices to switch to the new USB port. If you recently bought one you can check that it surely uses it.
In addition, you will see that it is also reversible. (i.e. the cable connector can be connected to the port on both sides)
Regarding the charging power, until now the USB port was only used as a power port for low-power electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, ebooks…) as it supported a maximum power of 12W (5V/2.4A).
However, the new USB Type-C port combined with the Power Delivery technology supports up to 100W (20V/5A).
This is the reason why we already find on the market laptops or monitors that use USB Type-C as a power port.
At this point, you will have realized the advantages of the USB Type-C port and Power Delivery in portable chargers.
For brands, it will mean fewer expenses (and headaches) to incorporate this type of product into their ranks; they will no longer have to use power bank models having a DC port or include manufacturer-specific adapters.
For users who have a laptop with a type C power port, they will be able to use any power bank to recharge it without having to buy specific models compatible with the laptop’s charging port.
And of course, you may ask yourself: What if my computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C charging port? Can I charge it with a power bank of this type?
As explained on the PowerBank20 website, it’s also possible to charge a laptop that doesn’t have a Type-C port. It uses a special cable that “tricks” the power bank by pretending that a Power Delivery compatible device is connected.
This cable can be found on AliExpress—it’s characterized by having one end with a type C connector. On the other is the DC connector of your laptop.’
However, we must not forget that we can also resort to the 2 “classic” options on the market:
- Looking for a power bank with a DC port and an adapter compatible with your laptop.
- Looking for a power bank with an AC port. In this case, there would be no compatibility problems since we plug the laptop charger itself into the portable charger.
In short, today there are multiple options when it comes to choosing a power bank to charge your laptop.
Thus, you can stay connected while working, watching a movie, or chatting on WhatsApp, which has incorporated important new features in the latest updates.
Everything will depend on the degree of portability you need, the budget you have, and, of course, your energy requirements; since a power bank should be your daily ally and not an “extra weight”.
